TACOMA, Wash. — “If you’re going to commit a crime, it’s probably not a good idea to take your animals with you,” the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office said.

This comment came after deputies responded to a call on March 15 around 2:30 p.m., attempting to arrest two suspects in a “freshly stolen vehicle” near Golden Given Road.

The 29-year-old driver was apprehended following a brief foot chase and taken into custody.

The passenger fled the scene, carrying her kitten with her.

When she emerged, deputies instructed her to lie on her stomach to be handcuffed.

Body camera footage captured the woman saying, “Dude, can I please get my kitten? I just wanted to keep him safe.”

A deputy responded, “You should’ve left him in the car, then. You call this keeping him safe?”

The kitten was unharmed and was handed over to the Tacoma Humane Society.

The 29-year-old driver was charged with eluding, resisting arrest, theft of a motor vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and multiple felony warrants.
